Understanding Steel Gauge and Millimeters
Gauge numbers decrease as thickness increases. For reference, typical cold-rolled sheet values are roughly: 14-gauge ≈ 1.9 mm, 12-gauge ≈ 2.7 mm, and 10-gauge ≈ 3.4 mm. When a manufacturer lists only “heavy-duty steel,” ask for exact millimeter or inch plate specifications to understand the real barrier.
Understanding Steel Gauge and Millimeters
Some safes claim thick “composite doors,” but hide thin steel skins over gypsum or drywall for fire resistance. That can be valuable for heat, yet it does not equal a solid steel plate. Separate the theft barrier (steel thickness) from the fire liner so you know which layer stops the crowbar and which slows the flames.
